ARTIST'S STATEMENT: "I am happiest when painting 'en plein air', literally, "in the open air", where I can hone my skills in observation; fitting all the pieces of the scene together. It is the realization of my love for our beautiful earth and it is the challenge of completing a painting before the light changes. The interplay of colors and light in nature are like a grand symphony with its constantly changing textures and tempos, varying dynamics and interactions of instruments. As a professional musician, I identify my painting with music. Through my art and through my music, I can now be more closely involved in the scene that I am painting. I am very grateful for this time in my life."
BIOGRAPHY: Carolyn Schrock is a pastel artist who regularly paints landscapes "en plein air". Since moving to Chapel Hill, NC from Rochester, NY in 2004, she has painted full time 9 months of the year in NC, with its lovely beaches and marshes, its farmlands and its mountains. For 3 months in the summer she lives and paints in northern Michigan, with its entirely different landscape. In August of 2011 she was privileged to travel and paint in the Lot Valley, near Bordeaux, France, with master pastelist Richard McKinley.
This is the third profession for Carolyn. While in Rochester she earned bachelor and master of music degrees from the Eastman School of Music, and was a professional organist, harpsichordist and music director. In addition she founded a popular baroque concert series there. Her bachelor of science degree was in nursing, and she practiced medicine until she began to raise a family.
Carolyn's paintings are in private collections in more than 10 states. Gallery representation has been by the Bill Hester Gallery in Chapel Hill (until he moved to Santa Fe in 2011), and several galleries in northern Michigan. Other artists in the Hester Gallery included John Axton, Marshall Noice, Barry McCuan, Lynne Windsor, Arlene LaDell Hayes, Steven Boone, Walter Horack, and David Unger, among others.
Carolyn is a founding member of Plein Air in the Triangle (PAINTNC). She also belongs to the Pastel Society of NC, and the Fine Arts League of Cary (NC), where she recently earned an honor award. She has been juried into the Great Lakes Pastel Society's annual international competition for the last 3 years. Recently she was also juried into the Chatham Artists' Studio Tour, and "Small Gems" show of the Cary Gallery of Artists. She is one of 10 artists painting at the NC Botanical Gardens on April 14 and 15, 2012.
