Plein Air Pastelist

ARTIST'S STATEMENT:  "I am happiest when painting en plein air, literally, in the open air, where I can hone my skills in observation, fitting all the pieces of the scene together.  It is the realization of my love for our beautiful earth and it is the challenge of completing a painting before the light changes.  The interplay of colors and light in nature are like a grand symphony with its constantly changing textures and tempos, varying dynamics and interactions of instruments.  As a professional musician, I identify my painting with music.  Through my art and through my music, I can now be more closely involved in the scene that I am painting.  I am very grateful for this time in my life."

BIOGRAPHY:  Carolyn Schrock is a pastel artist who regularly paints landscapes en plein air.  Since moving to Chapel Hill, North Carolina from Rochester, New York in 2004, she has painted full time ten months of the year in NC, with its lovely beaches and marshes, its farmlands and its mountains.  For two months in the summer she lives and paints in northern Michigan, with its entirely different landscapes.  She now paints regularly in the American Southwest as well.  She has been privileged to travel and paint in the Lot Valley, near Bordeaux, France, with master pastelist Richard McKinley, and in Provence with the renowned painter, Albert Handell.

This is the third profession for Carolyn.  While in Rochester she earned bachelor and master of music degrees from the Eastman School of Music, and was a professional organist, harpsichordist and music director for 30 years.  In addition, she founded a popular baroque concert series there. Her bachelor of science degree was from Cornell University in nursing, and she practiced medicine until she began to raise a family.

Carolyn's paintings are in private collections in more than 13 states and in Great Britain.  Gallery representation is by the Bill Hester Gallery on Canyon Road in Santa Fe.

Carolyn is a founding member of Plein Air in the Triangle (PAINTNC).  She also belongs to the Pastel Society of America, Pastel Society of North Carolina, Great Lakes Pastel Society and the Fine Arts League of Cary (NC), where she recently earned an honor award.  She has been juried into the Great Lakes Pastel Society's annual international competition several times.  She received an  award in the last juried state-wide pastel competition in North Carolina.  Recently she was also juried into the Chatham Artists' Studio Tour, and "Small Gems" show of the Cary Gallery of Artists.  She was one of 10 artists chosen to paint en plein air during  the NC Botanical Gardens tour in May, 2014.  Carolyn and her paintings were featured in the Spring 2014 edition of the CSA Journal (Society of Certified  Senior Advisors).
